A háború halottaira való emlékezésül zöld folyókával hímezték körül a kötényeket. A matyó hímzés összképe úgy hatott, mint a zöld mezőben tarkálló virágok.

A legrégebbi mezőkövesdi hímzések egyszínűek, amikor a többszínű fonalak megjelentek, már kötényeik a tarka színek egész bokrétájával ékeskedett.
